In its bid to ensure that only registered and wholesome bread are sold to Nigerian consumers, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has arrested ten persons in connection with unregistered bread while it impounded four vehicles used in the sales of same product.
Similarly, the agency, in collaboration with wine producers has confiscated wines and other alcoholic beverages from wine shops and bars across Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, for various offences bothering on what it described as “ parallel importation and non-registration” of their products.
During an early morning raid at the bread depots in Rumuokoro, Rukpokwu and other places within the Port Harcourt metropolis, NAFDAC officials accompanied by a detachment of men from the Nigeria Police Force succeeded in confiscating the unregistered bread.
Speaking on the developments,the Rivers State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mrs. Chinelo Ejeh, said that the operation is part of the agency's regular routine activities where unwholesome products are mopped up from circulation.
She explained that,“This morning raid was focused on unregistered bread and those using fictitious numbers, we are looking out for unapproved additives, such as potassium bromate which is carcinogenic and other unapproved bread enhancers. NAFDAC cannot guarantee the quality of any product that is not registered.”
Mrs. Ejeh said that those arrested will lead NAFDAC officials to their illegal bakeries where they produced the unregistered breads. She informed that as a deterrent, those who ran foul will have their bakeries sealed off and their equipment confiscated.
She appealed to the general public to come forward with useful information to help in the fight against illegal production activities. She assured that with useful intelligence about illegal bakery and other production outfits, appropriate action will be taken
The unregistered bread confiscated during the raid include those labelled as Chicken Cream Bread, DEEPTEP Bread, GRANDEY Bread, FAMOUS Buttered Bread, JOY Special Loaf, Godswill Fresh Bite, Devine Doughnut, Delightful Bread, High 5 Bread, AB Bread, Honey Land Bread, GRANDEY BREAD, NEW DON OK SUPRA LOAF and RECHLM doughnut.
On the sealing of alcoholic wine shops, the affected wine shops and bars were located at GRA Phase II and Roumumasi. Expensive wines and alcoholic beverages worth millions of naira were confiscated and moved to NAFDAC office and the owners invited for further investigations. The agency promised appropriate sanctions where necessary. Some of the confiscated wine and beverages include, Blue Label, Red Label, Johnie Walker, Belvedere Vodka, Jack Daniels, Remy Martins, among other expensive drinks
The NAFDAC enforcement team also raided fake alcoholic beverage sellers' joints at the Oil Mill market along Aba Road in Port Harcourt where different brands of alcoholic drinks were impounded and moved to NAFDAC office.
