The Acting VC who gave the charge while inaugurating officers of the newly elected Students Union Government (SUG) at the university Amphi Theatre on Sunday, said their priorities as students, should tailored towards enriching their knowledge so as to graduate with flying colours.
She noted that if students must take to the social media, less attention should be placed on such media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or WhatsApp, adding that the social media should rather be used to upgrade knowledge on their fields of study.
“You must be like the biblical children of Issachar who understood the times and knew what to do with it. You won't understand the times spending all your time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or WhatsApp”
The Acting Vice Chancellor said the task before members of the Students Union Government would not be easy as they are expected to lead by example, adding “Let your leadership style be such that other students in campus will emulate. So, as future leaders, you must set out time to mentor yourself so at the end, you have a good certificate”.
Professor Owei reminded them to appreciate the fact that they live in a competitive world where sound education would be an advantage.
According to the Acting VC, “You are living the best times of your lives now because you have people taking care of you. Very soon, you will be taking care of yourselves and so, don't just use the social media as a fad, but use it to increase your knowledge”.
The President of the Students Union Government (SUG), Comrade Pepple Precious Godwin after he alongside other executive members were administered the oath of office by Legal Adviser, Barrister Edwin Jonathan, promised that he would implement what he called the 'Precious Vision' hinged on transparency, probity and accountability.
He praised the Dean of Students Affairs (DSA), Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi who doubled as the Eleco Chairman for a job well done, even as he showered encomium on former Vice Chancellor, Professor Blessing Chimezie Didia for promoting credible students union election in the university.
While offering a hand of fellowship to his predecessor, Comrade Gogo Osima Elvis as well as to all those who lost out at the SUG election, he announced the dissolution of all appointments made by past government.
It was a colourful moment to relish as the leaders of the outgoing students union administration handed over documents and office keys to their successors, prompting deafening chants and songs of comradeship in the packed Amphi Theatre.
Dignitaries who graced the occasion include Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Hon. Victor Ihunwo, represented by Deputy Mayor, Hon (Mrs) Miriam Fiberesima; member representing Bonny Constituency in State House of Assembly, Hon. (Engr.) Blessing Pepple and some principal officers of the university.
