The Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), has elected new officers to pilot her affairs in the next four years with Comrade George Godspower Chinedu emerging as chairman.
Others who were overwhelmingly elected through the option A4 system were Comrade Progress Andrew, Secretary; Comrade Elizabeth A. Erebure, Treasurer, while Comrades Jumbo Monday Solomon, Sokari Dokubo, Hart Smart, Paddy Woke and Ikawe Fineface were returned as Ex-officio members of the union.
In his acceptance speech on behalf of his exco members, Comr. Godspower thanked all who made the election a great success especially the electoral committee.
He promised that they would not betray the confidence reposed in them as they will ensure that they work assiduously to leave a worthy legacy in the union.
The chairman-elect commended Mr. Adolphus Ideh and Mr. Edward Amangala, who contested the chairmanship position with him for giving him, a hot challenge.
He used the opportunity to let the members have a peep into his manifesto which he said include open door policy and all inclusive administration to improve the lot of NASU.
Comr. Godspower made it clear that election is not a do-or-die affair, adding that it will only be one person at a time and appealed for all hands to be on deck to move the union forward.
He said: “while we shall protect the interest of our employers at all times and maximize production, we shall equally not compromise the welfare of our union members.
The chairman made it clear that his Exco will ensure that negotiation and dialogue with the management will form their threshold at all times for their mutual relationship.
He equally used the opportunity to dedicate the election results to God who he said made it possible.
He said: “It is not by our might or righteousness that we emerged victorious in the contest and so I pray for God's protection and strength to deliver on our mandate.”
