Dedicated Traffic Volunteer Seeks Recognition Years After Service At Rumuigbo Junction

By Polycarp Nwaeke

A long-serving traffic volunteer from Rumuigbo in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr. Achor Wunnah, has called on government authorities to recognize and reward his years of selfless service in managing traffic within the community.

Mr. Wunnah, who stated that he has been controlling traffic since 2006, recounted his significant role during the construction of the Rumuokwuta flyover initiated under former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

According to him, the poor state of the roads at the time created severe traffic challenges, prompting him to take it upon himself to manage vehicular movement at the busy Rumuigbo Junction.

He explained that he consistently directed drivers through alternative routes, including the Psychiatric Road leading to Rumuokwuta, helping to ease congestion throughout the construction period.

He noted that he carried out the task alone, without the presence or support of traffic officials, earning commendation from residents and road users.

Mr. Wunnah further alleged that during a burial ceremony in Rumuigbo, the former governor publicly acknowledged his efforts and promised to reward him with a car, a house, and cash.

However, he claimed that the promise was not fulfilled following objections raised by some community leaders, who reportedly argued that he did not belong to the ruling party at the time.

Despite the setback, Mr. Wunnah said he has remained committed to controlling traffic in the area, describing it as his personal contribution to the development of his community and the state at large.

He has now appealed to Nyesom Wike, currently serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to revisit the matter and fulfill the earlier pledge.

He also called on the Obio/Akpor Local Government Chairman, the Rivers State Government, and the Federal Government to support and reward his dedication, either through empowerment or formal employment.

Drawing comparisons, Mr. Wunnah pointed out that another individual who engaged in similar voluntary traffic duties near the Air Force Base reportedly received recognition and support from Omega Power Ministry, including opportunities for training abroad and other benefits.

He expressed hope that his appeal would receive attention, emphasizing that proper recognition would not only improve his livelihood but also encourage others to contribute positively to society. Mr. Wunnah concluded by praising the former governor for his leadership and wishing him success in his current national assignment.
