By Hopejane Uzor

Residents of Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor and surrounding areas are set to benefit from a new waste collection system scheduled to commence in May 2026.

The Managing Director of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency, Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, disclosed that the initiative will involve the engagement of private service providers to take over refuse evacuation, supported by the deployment of modern technology to improve efficiency.

Dr. Wokoma explained that the move is part of efforts to enhance waste management across the state, ensure timely evacuation of refuse, and promote a cleaner environment.

He appealed to residents to comply with designated waste disposal times and urged them to channel complaints directly to the agency rather than resorting to social media.

The agency boss also revealed that work on a new dumpsite, which will replace the existing one along the Obiri-Kwere Airport Road, is nearing completion. According to him, the facility is in its final stage and will soon become operational as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening waste management infrastructure in the state.
