  • Religious Intolerance: CAN Disagrees With US

    …Demands Reason For Exonerating Nigeria

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has kicked against the removal of Nigeria from the list of countries with religious concern, insisting that there are still cases of religious intolerance in Nigeria.

CAN, in a statement signed by its President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, on Sunday, questioned the rationale behind the United States’ removal of Nigeria from the concern list as, according to him, available statistics has shown that there are still threats to religious tolerance in most parts of the country.

Nigeria was placed on the list alongside other countries during the regime of President Donald Trump in 2020 for engaging or tolerating “severe violations of religious freedom.”

However, on Wednesday, November 17, the United States removed Nigeria from the list of religious freedom violators during the visit of US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken to President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

In the CAN statement, the body asked the US to disclose the statistics it relied on before taking the decision to remove Nigeria from the list of religious freedom violators.

The Christian body noted that the US decision was at “variance with the reality on ground” and challenged the President Joe Biden’s administration to provide more information in order to clear the doubts on the matter.

The CAN statement reads:  “The US government did not contact us when they were listing Nigeria among the countries of ‘Particular Concern’ on religious freedom, neither did they seek our opinion before removing Nigeria from the list.

“If they had done, we would have been able to compare the statistics, then and now, on the issue of freedom of religion in Nigeria.

“All right-thinking people would continue to ask the US government to let the world know what has changed on the issue of religious freedom and persecution the Christians are facing between the time they placed the country in the list of ‘Countries of Particular Concern’ and now.

“CAN, in particular, will like to know. This is because all the factors that put Nigeria on the CPC list for the first time in 2020 are still there.

  • CBN Acknowledges Receipt Of Hidden N19.3bn Kogi Salary Bail-Out Funds

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has acknowledged the receipt of the sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 (Nineteen Billion, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Million, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Thousand, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Naira, Thirty-six Kobo) recovered the EFCC from the Kogi State Salary Bail-out account domiciled in Sterling Bank Plc.

This effectively puts to rest the campaign of misinformation and unconscionable denials by the Kogi State Government that no fund was recovered from its bail out account.

The apex bank in a letter referenced, DFD/DIR/CON/ EXT/01/099 and dated 9th November, 2021 informed the Executive Chairman, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa that it has received the money.

The letter reads in part: “We refer to your letter dated November 5, 2021 with Ref. No: CR:3000/EFCC/LS/ CMU/REC-STE/VOL.4/047 on the above subject and wish to confirm the details of the receipt of the amount as stated below: Bank: Sterling Bank Plc; Amount:  N19, 333, 333,333.36; Date of receipt: 04 November, 2021”.

The return of the money to the apex bank is in compliance with the October 15, 2021 Order of a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi Lagos directing the unfreezing of the Kogi State Salary Bail-out account to enable Sterling Bank to remit the balance in the account to the Central Ban of Nigeria. Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke gave the Order pursuant to an application filed by the EFCC.

The Commission had told the court that the management of Sterling Bank Plc, where the account was domiciled had acknowledged the existence of the said account with the staggering sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 in its books.

The Commission further brought to the attention of the court that “The sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 is still standing in the credit of the account frozen”, adding that “the management of Sterling Bank PIc, has, pursuant to a letter dated 15 September, 2021, signed by its Managing Director, indicated intention to return the total sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 back to the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

The EFCC prayed The court that it “is expedient for the instant suit to be discontinued and the account unfrozen to enable the management of Sterling Bank PIc effect the transfer/ return of the sum of the sum of N19, 333, 333, 333.36 back to the coffer of the Central Bank of Nigeria , where the said bailout funds was disbursed.”

The transfer has put paid to any further controversy regarding source and ownership of the funds and most importantly, aborted the funds dissipation.

On August 31, 2021, Justice Tijani Garba Ringim, a vacation Judge, had ordered the freezing of the account, following an ex-parte application filed by the EFCC.

The EFCC, in a 13-paragraph affidavit in support of the ex-parte application, had stated that it received a credible and direct intelligence, which led to the tracing of the funds reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities in account No. 0073572696 domiciled in Sterling Bank, Plc with the name Kogi State Salary Bailout Account.

After listening to the EFCC application, Justice Ringim on August 31, 2021, ordered the freezing of the account and directed the publication of the order in a national newspaper by the EFCC.

  • PH ‘Kpo-Fire’ Inferno Landlords May Lose Properties For Covering Up Culprits

PH ‘Kpo-Fire’ Inferno Landlords May Lose Properties For Covering Up Culprits

The Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Emeka Anyasodike Onowu has disclosed that landlords whose houses were bordered by the buildings used for suspected illegal bunkering activities, popularly called ‘kpo-fire’ in local parlance, that were engulfed in inferno over the weekend in Port Harcourt, would be invited by his Ministry in course of the investigations.

He warned that those found culpable of concealing knowledge of the existence of illegal bunkering activities by their neighbours, may have their properties sealed up or confiscated.

The Commissioner who stated this when he led journalists to the affected sites at Isiokpo Street, D/Line and at East-West Road, Rumuokoro on Monday, warned that government may take the action if it is shown that the landlords knew about the nocturnal activities and failed to report to the appropriate quarters.

The visits to the affected sites revealed burnt up fuel carriage tanks, drums, trucks and plastic containers, ostensibly used for the ‘kpo-fire’ activities.

He said Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, had mandated his Ministry to get to the root of the incidents, even as another fire disaster was reported at Nembe/Bille Jetty on Monday afternoon, vowing to use these unfortunate infernos, to tell Rivers people that “enough is enough”.

“If you have a property that you are benefitting from and your neighbor is doing an illegal business that could endanger your life and property, the most patriotic action you will take would be to report to the appropriate authorities.  Where you fail to do so, you will be treated as a culprit”, he said, adding that the owners of the land where the fire incidents took place have been given two weeks to report to the Ministry, warning that government would confiscate the lands if they failed to report.

Hon. Onowu further added that the CDC Chairmen and Community Youths Presidents where the conflagration took place would also be invited by the investigating committee to explain why they should allow such illegal activities in their domain.

The Commissioner revealed that a committee has been set up to investigate the fire disaster which, curiously, has raised plausible questions regarding the sequence of the ugly event.

“We want to know where these petroleum products are coming from.  If we know these, we then take it from there.  This committee would work in synergy with the Ministry of Energy and other relevant agencies, and have one week to submit its report”, he said, adding that anyone found culpable would be dealt according to the law, while appealing to members of the general public to come up with useful information that would help the ministry in its investigation.

The commissioner urged the public not to be scared of bringing information as failure to do so would be putting their lives and properties in continued danger.

Onowu expressed disappointment with security agencies whom he said, do not encourage members of the public from divulging useful information about activities of criminal elements in society.

According to him, “It is believed that when people come and give them information, they go round and reveal the source of the information to the same criminal elements, thereby putting their lives at risk.  That’s the reason for the lack of confidence on our security agencies”.

Speaking to journalists after the visits, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties, Mrs. Kindness Egbelu, said the Ministry had always carried out sensitizations to public places on effective fire management and warning landlords and residents on the dangers of harboring operators of the ‘kpo-fire’ in their neighborhood.

She said the illegal bunkerers had devised a means of hiding behind warehouses and even banks to do their businesses at nights, pointing out the Rumuokoro case where the inferno almost touched Zenith Bank and an event center, but for the quick intervention of men of the state fire service.

Also speaking, the State Director of Fire Service, Mr. John Chukwumati urged residents and landlords to be their brother’s keeper, by opening up to the government where illegal bunkering activities are going on, adding that the losses suffered by those affected by the infernos would have been avoided had their neighbours reported the activities earlier on.

He however expressed appreciation to God that no life was lost, even as he urged citizens to take advantage of the state Fire Service by calling the following numbers in the event of fire outbreak: 07031522199 and 08037744107.
