By Ken Asinobi

The Mpigi Family of the Gbene Lenwagbe Royal Dynasty, Koroma in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State has commenced elaborate funeral rites in honour of late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi, as activities began in earnest with tribute sessions scheduled across Abuja and Port Harcourt.

The late lawmaker, who represented his constituency in the 10th Senate until his passing on February 18, 2026, is being remembered through a blend of national ceremonies and deeply rooted traditional observances.

The funeral programme opened with a Night of Tributes slated for Wednesday, April 8, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, drawing expected attendance from political associates, government officials and well-wishers from across the country.

This will be followed by a valedictory session at the Senate Chambers of the National Assembly on Thursday, April 9, where colleagues are expected to reflect on his legislative contributions and years of public service.

Later the same day, attention will shift to Port Harcourt, where another Night of Tributes will hold at the Obi Wali Cultural Centre, underscoring the late senator’s strong ties to his home state and the Niger Delta region.

The dual tribute events in the nation’s capital and Rivers State highlight the wide reach of Mpigi’s influence, spanning both national politics and grassroots engagement.

Final rites will move to Koroma, his ancestral home, where a Service of Songs is scheduled for Friday, April 10, at Beth-El Anglican Church, Koroma Deanery.

The funeral service will take place at the same venue on Saturday, April 11, with interment to follow immediately at his country home, drawing family members, traditional leaders and community stakeholders.

A thanksgiving service on Sunday, April 12, will round off the ceremonies, bringing to a close a week-long series of events that reflect both the stature of the deceased and the deep sense of loss felt by his community.

Signed on behalf of the family by Ven. Dr. Goka M. Mpigi, the obituary described the late senator as a distinguished son of Gbene Lenwagbe Royal Dynasty, whose life and service left a lasting imprint on his people. As preparations continue, Koroma stands poised to receive dignitaries and mourners alike in what is expected to be a fitting farewell to one of its most prominent sons.
