Ogoni Wetlands Gain Global Recognition: A Testament To Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey’s Visionary In Environmental Restoration, Says Barr. Anthony Tabu.

The designation of the Ogoni Wetlands as a Ramsar Site of International Importance is more than an environmental milestone—it is a historic turning point for Ogoniland, the Niger Delta, and Nigeria’s environmental diplomacy.

I heartily congratulate Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey on this achievement and on the formal presentation of the Ramsar Certificate to the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).

This global recognition by the Convention on Wetlands validates what many have long known: that Ogoniland possesses wetlands and mangrove ecosystems of immense ecological, economic, and biodiversity value worthy of international protection. It repositions Ogoni from a symbol of environmental degradation to a model for science-driven restoration and sustainable management.

Prof. Zabbey’s leadership has been pivotal in making this possible. Under his watch, HYPREP has moved beyond conventional clean-up to embrace innovation, biodiversity recovery, community participation, and strategic global partnerships—including eDNA research with the World Maritime University and emerging pathways for carbon sequestration and carbon credits. The establishment of a dedicated Ramsar Desk further demonstrates foresight and institutional commitment.

The Ramsar designation strengthens international protection for the wetlands, enhances access to global funding and technical expertise, and creates new opportunities for research and sustainable livelihoods for Ogoni communities. It also places a renewed responsibility on all stakeholders to safeguard this fragile ecosystem for present and future generations.

Prof. Zabbey, you have proven that with vision, scientific integrity, and sustained commitment, environmental restoration in Ogoniland is not only possible but can earn global acclaim. This is a proud moment for the Niger Delta and for Nigeria.

I commend you, the management and staff of HYPREP, and all partners who contributed to this historic milestone. May this recognition inspire accelerated action toward the full restoration and sustainable development of Ogoniland.
