International Year Of Girl Child: Job Tasks Female Children On Greater Commitment To Education
As the global community marks the International Day of the Girl Child, wife of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Chairman, Mrs. Roseline Vincent Job has called on young girls of school age to make education their priority in order to compete favourably with their male counterparts.
Mrs. Job made the call at this year’s ceremony held at Bro. Felix Obuah Pavilion, where female students from schools within the Local Government Area were represented.
The ONELGA First Lady who anchored her advice on this year’s theme: “Invest in Girls Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being” enjoined government at all levels to invest in the education of the girl child, in fulfilment of the Child Rights Act to ensure there is no gap between the girl and the boy child.
According to her, every child – boy or girl deserves the right to education, which is pivotal in the development of the society.
Also speaking, Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman on Women Affairs, Hon. ChiomaEmeji called on parents to place education of their children, particularly girls in the front-burner, as educating a woman is educating a nation.
She warned against early marriage, child abuse and other anti-social activities that lead to moral decadence and advocated strong legislation that would criminalise such actions so that the society can be a better place for all.
There were sensitization and capacity building for girls and special presentations.
Prizes were awarded to deserving schools while certificates of participation were also presented to participating schools.
The International Day of the Girl Child is an annual event set aside by the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to raise awareness on the importance of girl child education in the society.
