Work On Top Gear On Ogoni-Andoni -Opobop-Nkoro Unity Road
In line with the pledge of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, work has been intensified on the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Unity Road, with final structural works on the last stretch of the Opobo axis of the road.
Following months of intense construction on the road, what is left to enter the Island Town of Opobo is the last bridge where engineers and structural experts are erecting the beams.
Addressing journalists after tour of the Opobo axis of the iconic project, Prohect Engineer, Tunde Taiwo said that about 70percent of the project has been completed.
He said: “We have completed about 65percent to 70percent of the road. We are hopeful that in the next few months, we will complete the Opobo axis of the road.
“The total length of the Opobo axis is 12kilometres. We have already asphalted over 6kilometres of the road and we have completed bush clearing to the very end of the road.
“We have done stone base up to 9kilometres and we have done sharp sand-filling of more than 10kilometres of the entire length of the road”.
He informed that work on the beams of the bridge linking Opobo town has commenced, noting that sub-structural work is in progress while soil investigation has been completed.
The Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Unity Road Project Engineer said that the ancient town is already in sight .
He said: “The location where we are is very close to Opobo town. The building behind me is the police station in Opobo. The gate directly opposite is the Local Government Council Secretariat.
“We just have about 300 to 400 metres and we are already in Opobo town”.
In his remarks, Chairman of Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area, Mr Eugene J. Jaja commended Governor Wike for the intensified construction of the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Unity Road.
He thanked Governor Wike for his commitment to the welfare of the Opobo people as demonstrated by the dedication to the completion of the road.
“He has demonstrated his love in the construction of this road. The importance of the road to the Opobo man and woman cannot be over-emphasised.
“With this road being constructed, our economy will be boosted. Prices of items will decrease as vehicles will drive in and out of the town”.
The Rivers State Government has also delivered on the Opobo-Nkoro Water Project, which was funded in partnership with international development partners.
