The Chairman of Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board, Chief David Briggs, has said there has been a decline in African traditions and values in younger generations of Nigerians.
Briggs who spoke in an interview expressed displeasure over the current trend of social ills in society, saying that social ills in the society show that African traditions and values have declined.
Briggs said that the younger generation of people have deviated from acceptable social norms in African society.
According to him, a true African society has never been so negatively impacted and infiltrated by the western culture as it is today.
He cited a situation where there could be a disagreement between two persons, saying that the African tradition permits that a third person or a passer-by can intervene to put an end to such a disagreement that could lead to a fight, destruction of property or loss of life.
He said that younger generations of people, instead of making peace in such a situation, would take their phones and get video shots of the incident to post on social media, saying that the practice is bad and unacceptable.
He said that the practice had led to death of people and dehumanization of others in this part of the world.
Briggs said: “In the western society, before people start recording or video any incident, they must have called 911 for rescue and that what they record is not mainly for the social media but rather used as an evidence for the police to further their investigation or do arrest but ours is a different thing”.
He said that the trend has reduced African traditions and norms and urged younger people to move away from such unacceptable behaviour which he said is not only alien but also destructive in African society.
