Tough Times Await Street Traders In Rivers
…As Bill Scales Through First Reading
Those still thinking that the ban on street trading and illegal motor parks by Rivers State Government is a joke should have a rethink.
This is because the bill seeking to prohibit all forms of street trading, illegal motor parks and mechanic workshops in Rivers State has scaled through first reading on the floor of the State House of Assembly.
Presenting the Bill on the floor of the House, Majority Leader, Martin Amaewhule, commended the executive for the bill, describing it as timely.
Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikuinyi Owaji Ibani, said that the bill which is titled “Rivers State Street Trading, Illegal Market and Motor Park Prohibition Bill 2019” is intended to sanitize the state.
The bill, which is an executive bill, was brought before the House through a correspondence by Governor Nyesom Wike and is intended to prohibit all forms of street trading, illegal markets and motor parks and ensure sanity in the state.
In another development, the Rivers State House of Assembly has for the third time deferred debate on report of the ad-hoc committee on Bille passenger boats sea pirate attacks to another legislative day.
Majority of lawmakers who objected to the commencement of debate on the report said that they were yet to receive copies of the report and would be unable to make any input and voted in favour of the deferment.
