Lawmaker Condemns Importation Of Meat To Rivers

The lawmaker representing Emuoha Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly,Hon. Sam Ogeh has condemned the Importation of meat by meat sellers into the state.

He stressed the need for butchers to comply with the existing laws on abatoirs and meat handling adding that much of the imported meat were either infested or dead animals.

He also expressed worry that those who handle the meat for human consumption do not handle such activities with standard practices as the abatoirs lack hygienic conditions.

He said to avoid the consequences of exposing the people to the dangers of eating unhealthy meat, he prayed the House to among other things condemn the new trend of importation of meat into the state.

He also prayed the House to take all necessary actions to stop the menace while calling on the relevant agencies in the state to step up action and ensure that all laws on slaughtering of animals are adhered to.

Supporting the motion,the lawmaker representing Akuku-Toru Constituency 2, Hon. Enemi George regretted that toxic and harmful substances are used in preserving chickens and called for monitoring of cold rooms where chickens are preserved.

The House however resolved that the House Committees on Agriculture and Health do interface with their respective ministries on the issue and and report back to the House.
