Rivers Lawmakers Also Worried Over COVID-19

Worried over the at which Corona Virus is ravaging the country the Rivers State legislators have passed a resolution mandating the House committees on Health, Information and Training to liaise with relevant ministries saddled with responsibility of containing the spread of corona virus in the state.

The joint committee were also mandated to periodically brief the House on the steps taken to prevent the catastrophe from entering the state.

This followed a motion of urgent public Importance on the COVID 19 pandemic presented today by the Chairman house committee on information and training Enemi Alabor George.

Enemi Alabor George while presenting the motion stated that the virus which has been declared a pandemic by the WHO is startling and worrisome while noting that nothing in recent times has shaken the world to its foundation in this manner.

He among other things prayed the House to commend Governor Nyesom Wike for his prompt and proactive response in the wake of the pandemic and also the House to through its relevant committees liaise with relevant ministries to ascertain the level of preparedness.

He further prayed the House to through its relevant committees monitor and ensure that measures put in place by Government are being complied with.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ikwuiyi Owajj Ibani at the end of debate on the motion described the steps taken by Governor Wike as commendable  while lauding the citizens for observing the directives of Government with regard to the pandemic.

All the members present who were already panicked with not just the speed at which the pandemic is spreading but with the fact that the country has already  recorded a first death of COVID 19 victim supported the prayers of the motion with minor amendments.

They also urged the House to ensure that Rivers People and residents comply with all the precautionary measures as while adhering strictly to all the directives of the Government.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) as at 11 pm on Monday 24th March revealed that the number of Corona Virus cases in Nigeria has risen to 42.
