COVID-19: Decontamination Of Elelenwo, Others: Obuah Cautions Against Indiscriminate Dumping Of Used Face Marks

The Sole Administrator, Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Bro Felix Obuah says used and condemned face masks also constitute a health hazard like any other waste and should be handled with care, property bagged and disposed of, at government approved receptacles.

Bro Obuah made the observation against the ugly sight of used and expired face masks littering the roads, streets and gutters in parts of Port Harcourt which according to him are not only irritating but also a possible source of infection.

The RIWAMA boss while monitoring the ongoing State decontamination of public places in Elelenwo including the State Primary School Elelenwo, St. Mark’s Anglican Church Deanery Elelenwo among others, cautioned against the indiscriminate dumping of the materials at unapproved places to play safe in the face of the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic.

“I believe we have been sensitized enough to conduct ourselves properly both in private and public places through public enlightenment programmes by the state government on the dangers of the global scourge.

“We must therefore adhere to all the directives including observing proper hygiene, regular washing of hands under running water, use of alcohol-based sanitizers, social distancing and complying with the ban and, or conditions for public worship and gatherings etc.

“All this will no doubt help in no small measure to curtail the spread of the deadly Coronavirus until a vaccine for the cure is discovered,” Bro Obuah warned.

The RIWAMA Sole Administrator, Bro Felix Obuah further warned that the state government has put all necessary machinery and task forces in place to ensure adequate compliance with the orders, stressing that any flagrant disobedience to the orders will not be tolerated as the offenders will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the relevant State Executive Order.
