Inmate gives birth to twins in Calabar Prison, named them Ben and Linda Ayade

An inmate in Afokang Prison, Calabar, Cross River State has delivered a set of twins inside the Prison yard and named them after the State Governor and his wife, Ben and Linda Ayade.

Journalist learnt that the inmate delivered the twin, a boy and a girl on Thursday, following an intense labour.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong said the woman had complicated labour and later developed some postpartum morbidity, after which she was referred to a better health facility where she’s being taken care of.

Dr. Asibong said, “This was following a distress call from the Prison authorities about an inmate with complicated labour and our team immediately swung into action upon arrival of the pregnant woman.

“The lady was delivered of a set of twins, a boy and a girl, and unfortunately she developed some postpartum morbidity and had to be referred for expert management.”

After her successful delivery, the Governor, Sen. Ben Ayade, donated a sum of one million Naira (N1,000,000) and other gift items to inmate and her babies.

Making the donations on behalf of the Governor, Dr. Asibong said, “His Excellency, Sen. (Prof.) Ben Ayade has taken over management of the babies and already christened them Benedict and Linda Ayade while awaiting full recovery of the mother.

“This also highlights the magnanimity of His Excellency in ensuring no child goes to bed hungry”, she said.

The Nigerian Prison Authority commended the State Government for their swift response in arresting the situation following the critical condition.

At the time of filing this report, the father to the babies is yet to be known.

May God see them through.
