Security Expert Calls On Politicians To Embrace State Police, Work Towards Realization

A security expert, Efe Wanagor, has appealed to politicians to embrace the idea of state police and work towards its realization.

The security expert said pressure should be put on National Assembly and federal government to make it possible for powers on policing to devolve to states.

He said that the police force should be decentralized.

The security expert said: “Whereas the debate continues, whereas it appears like the politicians now appear to have been keying into the idea of state policing it doesn’t seem to be happening yet”.

He however said it would not be entirely a state affair.

He said that crimes should be categorized saying crimes like homicide and crimes committed by syndicates operating across states should be tackled by an elite federal force while states should be in charge of everyday policing.

Wanagor said security operatives should know their places of operation very well to succeed.

He commended Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State for recently launching a new security outfit – C4i.

He however said there should be specialization and competence among operatives of the new security outfit.

The security expert said for the security outfit to succeed there should be an integrated system involving other security arms other than police.

He said that the government should get daily reports on the activities of the new security outfit and should track them to know what is happening and their operations.

He said there should be collaboration with the police to handle their deficiencies.

The security expert said: “An active collaboration needs to happen, an inter-agency collaboration at the highest level and at the operational level must happen. The police have deficiencies. There are areas where the military are stronger. There are areas where the DSS have better input. So they must come together and work”.

He also said there must be accountability in security agencies and said all hands must be on deck to make the security system work.

The security expert also said there must be political will to ensure that security agencies succeed in their responsibilities.

He was sharing his thoughts on the new security outfit and security architecture across the country on Nigeria Info 92.3 last weekend.

Wanagor said there should be collaboration between agencies to fight crime.
