Fans Tip Osihmen To Replace Ighalo

Fans have urged Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, to use Victor Osihmen as a replacement for retired striker Odion Ighalo.

They said this after the youngster grabbed a brace on his debut for Ligue 1 side, Lille, on Sunday.

Osimhen’s goals in the 19th and 80th minutes saw Lille defeat Nantes 2-1 in their opening game.

With his goal, Osimhen becomes the second Nigerian to score on his Ligue 1 debut since Austin Okocha (for PSG) in 1998.

After emerging as the highest goal scorer at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Ighalo announced his retirement from international football.

When the player retweeted a post glorifying his goal on Monday, some of the fans described him as the new Rashidi Yekini of Nigeria.

One of them, Henry Iloka, wondered why Rohr refused to use the striker at the 2019 AFCON.

“I don’t know why Rohr left him on the bench all through, Ighalo or nobody isn’t good for us,” he added.

Another commenter, Obong Itata, faulted “Rohr’s style of dropping explosive young talents” for old ones.

He said, “Ighalo deserves the due respect. We’ve seen better strikers for the Super Eagles – Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Obafemi Martins and Emmanuel Emenike – to mention three. We know most of his goals have been fortuitous tap-ins and penalties. The sheer potential of Osimhen just makes one wonder why Rohr hardly played him.”

Odds Chaser said, “Osimhen should be our number 9 in the Super Eagles. He is talented.”

“He is a perfect replacement forIghalo,” Sunday Nwenyim added.

Tolulope Desmond described his debut goals as wonderful, adding that they showed that the player has “Yekini instinct.”
