Rivers NAWOJ Lauds Gov Wike For  Assenting Women’s Inheritance Law

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Rivers State Chapter has commended the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Bar. Nyesom Wike for signing into law the right of women to share in the family property as passed by the State Legislature.

The commendation was contained in a statement signed by the Chairperson and Secretary of the association, Susan Serekara-Nwikhana and Ngozi Anosike respectively.

The Law which has “The Rivers State Prohibition of The Curtailment of Women’s Right to Share in Family Property Law No. 2 of 2022” as its title was assented to alongside “Rivers State Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Law No. 3 of 2022”, and “The Rivers State Pension Reform (amendment) Law No. 4 of 2022”.

NAWOJ also commended Governor Wike for highlighting the importance of the law to the development of the State, as it will enable its women to actualise their potentials.

Expressing happiness that women in the state will from henceforth be allowed by law to inherit their entitlements,NAWOJ queried why most cultures, do not encourage what engenders growth among women in our society. 

The association described the situation as a new dawn in the state and thanked Governor Wike for frequently creating enabling environment for women in the state to grow and occupy leadership positions.

Rivers NAWOJ further expressed delight that female children who in most times are more useful members of the society in comparism to most male children will no longer be deprived from sharing in the inheritance of their families and promised to educate women in the rural areas on their rights to inherit what belongs to their fathers.

It would be recalled that the Bill on Prohibition of Curtailment of Rights of Women, was a private member bill sponsored by Hon. Michael Chinda, representing Obio-Akpor constituency II in the State Assembly.
