RSHA Approves Dissolution Of RSIEC
The Rivers State House of Assembly has approved the dissolution of the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC.
This is sequel to a letter from Governor Nyesom Wike requesting approval from the Assembly to dissolve the commission.
Commencing debate on the request, House Leader, Martin Amaewhule relying on section 4 sub section 1 of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2018 which stipulates that, the Governor through two third of members has the right to dissolve the commission for its inability to discharge its functions urged the House to support the dissolution.
He noted that of the activities of the commission are no longer in line with the laws of the land and in the interest of the state.
Other lawmakers, including Nathaniel Owaji (ONELGA 2), Anselem Oguguo (Ikwerre) and Solomon Sokulo (Abua/odual) in their respective contributions supported the dissolution citing the commission’s failure to report to the Chairman House Committee on Agencies and Commissions , Mr Nathaniel Owaji.
In his ruling, the Speaker Ikwuiyi Owaji Ibani informed that the dissolution was on Public interest.
He said the electoral process ought to be transparent and when it fails then, the commission should not be allowed to function.
