Worried by the rising rate of unemployment in the State and country at large, the Rivers State government has adopted a new strategy towards reducing the queue of job seekers in the labour market.
This measure, according to the State Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, Dr. Leloonu Nwibubasa, is the provision of entrepreneurship training to all 200 level students in higher institutions of learning in the State.
The Commissioner, who was speaking at an award ceremony of the National Union of Khana Students (NUKS) Holiday Summit last weekend, said the measure is intended to reduce the rate of unemployment amongst graduates.
“Rivers State Government will build a fashion and designing village that will take care of those who will acquire the entrepreneurship training,” he said.
He added that one of the visions of his Ministry is to extend entrepreneurship training in all higher institutions in Rivers State, stressing that the entrepreneurship training for 2nd year students would serve as a pilot test.
Dr. Nwibubasa also explained that the students will acquire more skills aside their field of study and will be granted employment after their National Youth Service Corps programmes.
Responding, the President of National Union of Khana Students (NUKS), Victor Neebari, thanked the Commissioner for the gesture and assured that the trainees would make good use of the skills acquired.
To the trainees, Neebari said: “you should see yourselves as potential leaders and people that can take care of themselves through these skills.”
