2019 Elections: Be Warned, Army Tells Troublemakers
Ahead of the Presidential and National Assembly elections rescheduled for Saturday, February 23, troublemakers and those plotting to foment trouble in Rivers State and elsewhere in and around the Niger Delta have been warned to desist forthwith, or face the wrath of the law.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Land Component Commander (LCC) JTF OPDS, Maj. Gen. Jamil Sarham issued the warning while addressing newsmen in Port-Harcourt on the preparedness of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army for the 2019 general elections.
According to Gen. Sarham, the 6 Division Nigerian Army, which covers Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers States has concluded all necessary arrangements to assist civil authorities in the smooth and peaceful conduct of the elections.
He disclosed that all participating troops have undergone series of trainings and issued with the Code of Conduct For Armed Forces Of Nigeria During Elections And Rules of Engagement For Operation Safe Conduct During 2019 General Elections aimed at guiding the troops’ conduct while on duty.
While reaffirming the neutrality of the troops and to continue to remain apolitical as they carry out their assigned duties, the GOC emphasized that the troops would not tolerate any act by anyone to truncate the electoral process.
Gen. Sarham also disclosed that his men have on good authority that some sponsored miscreants were planning to use military-like dress pretending to be troops of the Nigerian Army to disrupt the elections, stressing that such plan had already failed as no soldier would be allowed to be seen in the vicinity of any polling area.
Anyone in military uniform in a polling unit, he said, is an imposter and should be treated as such.
The Army General said anyone with useful information about any security breach during the elections should contact the 6 Division of the Army on 09027771482.
