INEC Postponement Of General Election, National Embarrassment – Oyigbo Council Boss
The postponement of the Nigerian General Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the weekend, five hours before its commencement has been described as a national embarrassment and a colossal economic loss to the country.
The Oyigbo Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Prince Gerald Oforji (JP), stated this in a chat with newsmen over the weekend in the area.
He said that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, from all indication was under pressure to do the bidding of the All Progressives Congress and President Muhammadu Buhari in their desperation to manipulate the elections in their favour.
According to the council boss, “It is clear that Nigerians have abandoned the APC-led federal government under Buhari, hence the government is desperate to cling unto power by all means”. He said Nigerians are prepared, despite the sudden shift of the election date, to vote out President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday, February 23rd, saying that what INEC did was just to postpone the doomsday.
Prince Oforji assured that the council area has been sensitized and fully mobilized for the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming rescheduled elections.
He said: “The people were made ready with their PVCs to vote out this evil APC administration before we were woken to the rude shock of the election postponement. However nothing is stopping the revolution, Buhari must go for Nigeria to be better.”
Prince Oforji explained that apart from the huge economic loss on the people and the nation, the postponement of the election could lead to voters apathy.
He said: “Those who left their other engagements and travelled to their polling units at the hinterland to vote might not be willing to have a repeat performance”.
The Council Boss used the opportunity to advise INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu, to ensure that he conducts a free, peaceful, transparent and credible election in the interest of democracy.
According to him, “A peaceful and credible election is possible in Nigeria if the authorities want and anything short of that will spell doom to the country. All that is required is for INEC to distribute the electoral materials on time to the polling booths and as well to ensure that politicians and the security agents remain neutral while the citizens peacefully exercise their franchise like in any other civilized countries of the world”.
He used the occasion to urge the people of Oyigbo and Nigerians equally to remain focused and steadfast with the PDP till the assignment of voting out the Buhari administration is accomplished.
He also reiterated the resolve of the people of Oyigbo to give 100% votes to the PDP to boost their chances of getting more dividends of democracy from the Wike administration which he said will be re-elected to consolidate on his achievements.
