Banigo Advocates For Reading Culture
Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo has urged children of school age to spend more time in reading books to get useful information instead of whiling away time on the social media.
Dr. Banigo stated this during a courtesy visit by members of the Sea View Poetry Club of Port Harcourt at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday, 11th July, 2019.
According to the Deputy Governor who expressed delight with the fact that the Poetry Club of Port Harcourt is positively impacting on the Children said we must continue to inculcate in our children the culture of reading.
She also advocated for the teaching of history in schools for our children to be well informed about the past, noting that family and societal values seems to be crumbling because of lack of direction.
“There is no history taught all these must change for instance in this part of the country we must teach our children what happened during the Nigerian Civil War, they need to know going forward so they can have a dream for the Niger Delta Region and pursue it”. Dr Banigo further stressed.
In her remarks the President of the Sea View Poetry Club of Port Harcourt Dr. Ekechi Amadi said the club desires to partner with the State Government to take poetry to at least two schools in each Local Government Area of the State.
According to her the club is currently working on an anthology which focuses on the issues of the environment within the Niger Delta Region and the World at large, noting that the club promotes the use of poetry in voicing out emotions rather than taking up arms and all sorts of evil engagement.
