In a bid to enhance security in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Council boss, Hon. Tony Philmoore has donated equipment to the security agencies for crime fighting in the area.
Hon. Philmoore said the essence of domiciling “Operation Sting” in Delga is not to kill the people but to discourage them from going into crime.
He stated this Wednesday, during the launching of Delga “Sting” and handing over of security patrol van and gunboat to the police authorities at the Council Headquarters in Degema.
The Council boss assured that the domestication of the Rivers State Government’s ‘Operation Sting’ in the local government area would effectively help the police put an end to all criminal activities.
According to him, ‘Delga Sting’ is a brainchild of the security agencies, which the military has perfectly trained as a special squad, profiled and approved by the Nigeria Police and handed over with a tag “Community Police”, saying that they will be working in collaboration with the security agencies. Hon Philmoore further said that the gunboat would take care of the waterways while the patrol van would be used to combat crime at the Emohua-Kalabari link road.
The Council boss said the era of the youths indulging in social vices because they lack avenue for free education and skills acquisition is over. He charged the youths to take advantage of the free education programme to aspire for higher education and acquire relevant skills.
The Area Commander, Degema Police Division, ACP John Mark said with the security equipment procured by the council boss, shows that the council is sincere about ending insecurity in the area and that it is a clear signal that criminals and robbers no longer have a hiding place in the local government area.
He promised that the police will supervise the community police and administer them to keep the waterways and the roads safe. He also used the opportunity to call on the chairmen of Akulga, Asalga and Abua/Odual to borrow a leaf from the Delga chairman to improve on security in their various areas.
The leader of Degema Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Philip Fayeofori, also disclosed that very soon they would enact waterways and coastal area protection law to stem the tide of insecurity along the Degema waterways.
He said if such law is passed, it would curb piracy on the waterways as well as protect the local communities from being washed off by erosion due to coastal dredging, assuring that the legislative arm of the council would continue to collaborate with the executive chairman to promote peace and development in the area.
