…Promises To Boost Practical Skills Of IT Students
The management of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation (RSNC), publishers of The TIDE Newspaper has assured that henceforth all necessary measures will be applied to ensure students posted to the corporation for industrial training gain the required skills.
The General Manager of the Corporation, Mr Vincent Ake made the promise while playing host to the crew of Linguistics and Communication Studies department of the University of Port Harcourt who visited him at his No 4 Ikwerre Road office in Port Harcourt recently.
Mr. Ake said though the corporation had related with the University in the area of students’ industrial training for a long time but the visit was the first of its kind and thanked the visiting lecturers for their appreciation.
He observed the need for mutual co-operation between the media and the university of Port Harcourt and other institutions involved in the training of prospective journalists.
The general manager however regretted that the new generation of journalists seems not to appreciate the enormity of their responsibilities as information disseminators and those whose task it is to keep the society informed on issues that have to do with all their interests.
Mr. Ake said university lecturers though partners, occupy a special place in the chain of information management by imparting knowledge on news reporting and mass communication generally to prospective journalists and should be given all the necessary support especially in the area of practical skills to the students to complement their theoretical knowledge.
“It’s against this backdrop that I want to thank the new HOD of Linguisties and Communication Studies, Uniport, Prof. Aniefiok Jackson Udoudo for his insight and concern to see that the students and graduands of Linguistics and Communication Studies are not only theoretically sound but also well grounded in all forms of practical news reporting and writing.
Earlier, the HOD, and leader of the visiting lecturers, Professor A. J. Udoudo said the reason for their visit was to seek the hand of friendship of Rivers State Newspaper Corporation (The TIDE) and further cement the symbiotic relationship between the two in the area of students industrial training (IT), conferences/workshop and refresher courses for practising journalists.
Prof. Udoudo who formally took over the headship of Linguistics and Communication Studies department in January this year said the visit was part of the efforts of the new administration to reposition the department by ensuring that its products represent the department and by extension, the university proudly in the field and the wider society both in learning and conduct.
Prof. Udoudo said from henceforth, the department would directly send the students to their various places of industrial training and closely monitor such students as part their requirements for graduation.
The University don pleaded with the corporation to report any student trainee attached to it that shows no commitment to work, saying that is the only way they can be checkmated and made to be serious with their studies.
On the visit with Prof. Udoudo were Dr. (Mrs) C. Aleruchi, a senior lecturer in the department, Pastor Chukwuemeka Iroham and Felix Adekola.
