…Dismisses Ethnicity As Criterion For Selection Of Leaders
A one time Commissioner for Sports in Rivers State, Hon. Allwell Onyesoh has given Governor Nyesom Wike a pat on the back for the infrastructural transformation of the state by his administration.
While fielding questions from journalists on Democracy Day, June 12, 2020, Hon. Onyesoh described Gov. Wike as a visionary and detribalized leader, who has done much for the state through his people-oriented projects and policies.
The Etche born politician said compared to the previous administrations and what was on ground upon assumption of office, the governor has written his name in gold for posterity.
Hon. Onyesoh said the problem with Nigeria is with the leadership. According to Hon. Onyesoh, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the country lacks the democratic tenets to make it function effectively as a democratic nation.
He recalled the circumstances that led to the declaration of June 12, as Democracy Day in Nigeria, and called for the promotion of national cohesion and true federalism by the country’s leaders.
To attain the desired greatness, he said, Nigerian leaders must show accountability, transparent management of the nation’s God-given resources to book a place in the comity of nations.
Hon. Allwell Onyesoh regretted that the federal government is largely responsible for the under-development of the country, alleging that it has not effectively and prudently managed the abundant resources with which Nigeria is blessed due to greed and corruption.
“It’s therefore high time we got our leadership style right, end all conflicts, imbibe democratic principles so that the country can grow,” he declared.
On the issue of where the next Rivers State Governor should come from as being agitated in some quarters, Hon. Onyesoh said he does not believe in rotating power as the solution to problems because doing well in governance has nothing to do with where the leader comes from.
Effective leadership according to Hon Onyesoh, depends on one’s capacity and one’s understanding of what the people need.
He lambasted those accusing and criticizing Governor Wike for concentrating his development projects only in Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas, saying that the two Local Government Areas are the gateway into the state for investors.
Hon. Onyesoh also lauded government efforts to complete Trans-Kalabari road, stressing that upon completion, it will be a big plus to the state because of the tourism potentials of the area that will accrue money into government coffers.
