The Nigeria Union Of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has expressed appreciation to the Rivers State Government for the recent decontamination of the Union’s secretariat otherwise known as the Press Centre, at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The fumigation exercise was carried out on Wednesday by the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) as parts of the state government’s efforts to level the curve of coronavirus in the state.
The Union, in a statement issued on Thursday, expressed gratitude to the Rivers State governor, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and the Sole Administrator of RIWAMA, Brother Felix Obuah, for extending the ongoing decontamination exercise in the state to the council.
The statement jointly signed by the State Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Stanley Job Stanley and Ike Wigodo respectively, described the fumigation of the Press Centre as a significant move by the state government to protect the lives of journalists who put their lives on the line to keep the society informed about the disease.
According to the Union, “It also goes to show that the Rivers State Government and the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) understand and appreciate the critical roles played by journalists especially during this critical period of COVID-19 pandemic and the need for them to stay alive to discharge their duties effectively”.
The Council pledged its continued support to the state government in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, expressing happiness that journalists in the state have been effective in their reportage of the dreaded disease.
The Council called on the state government to extend the fumigation exercise to all public buildings and major outlets in the state while also equipping them with safety kits against the disease.
