Joi Nunieh: Court Hears Motion August 13

A court will hear motion for amendment in the case about invasion of residence of immediate past Acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission.

The court will hear the motion for amendment on Thursday, presided by Honourable Justice E. N. Thompson of the Port-Harcourt High Court.

At its last sitting, the court granted the request of counsel to police, Gladys Imegu, for time to study court processes served on her before she would decide whether to oppose a motion for amendment brought before the court by counsel to plaintiff.

J. A. Aaron, counsel for the former acting managing director had told the court that he was having a motion for amendment but the counsel to police had said she needed time to study the court processes for her to decide on whether or not to oppose the motion.

On his part, counsel for Department of State Services, C.S. Eze, told the court that he was not opposed to the motion for amendment.

In the end, the judge granted the request by counsel to police and had adjourned to 13 August for complainant’s counsel to bring forward his motion.

The former acting managing director, Joi Nunieh, instituted action against the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and others after police allegedly attempted to whisk her away from her residence in Port-Harcourt.

Police personnel reportedly stormed her residence and made to take her away but did not succeed.

She told newsmen she called the governor of state, Chief Nyesom Wike, for help who later arrived at her residence and rescued her.

She later got a court injunction restraining the police from arresting her.

As she spoke to newsmen at the time, she said: “Senator Magnus Abe called me after a while that the CP in Rivers State did not really know about it and that the CP was going to reach me. The CP did reach me and said he was not aware of what was going on. The CP asked that I send him my address and which I did and then I saw the cars come in. So I asked if that was the CP and they said no.

“Fortunately, I was just wise enough. I stayed by the door and they wanted to drag me. So I just banged the door, so they can’t come in. I now left to call my governor to tell my governor that this is what has happened and he said no, I should not go anywhere, that he was on his way”.

But police image-maker in Rivers State, Nnamdi Omoni, said that the State Command was aware of the operation.

In a statement, Omoni said: “We state that the officers who were at the residence of the former Ag. MD, Joi Nunieh, were from the IGP Monitoring Team in Abuja and were here on official assignment. That before they proceeded to her residence, they observed the protocols and requisite standard operating procedures including going through the processes of arriving themselves at the Headquarters with their investigation activities duly signed and approved by the Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph G. Mukan”.

He said that the police wanted to arrest the former acting managing director over petition not related to issues surrounding the Niger Delta Development Commission.
