Group Kicks Off SDG Projects In Rivers Communities

A frontline Community-based organization, Sustainable Citizens Participation has engaged relevant stakeholders in the communities and government, aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goal.

The programme, carried out on continuous basis, is part of projects funded by the United Nations Development Fund (UNDEF) implemented by Freky Andrew-Essien Care Foundation (FAECARE Foundation).

The project, which is being executed in Omudioga Community in Emohua Local government Area of Rivers State started from September 2017 – October 2018.

According to the Executive Director, Freky Andrew Essien, “the aim of the project was to engage community members to take on responsibility of development within their communities. She further explained that though carrying out the project was not an easy task but with the use of resourceful personnel, the project became impactful on the communities.

For instance, the impact of knowing ones needs and being able to work together was necessary, which, she noted was the focus of the project.

She further explained that 22 persons were put together as Implementation Committee otherwise referred to as Community Consultative Committee which role were to identify communities’ needs, prioritize the needs and engage stakeholders within and outside the communities relevant to solving identified needs.

According to her, “in Omudioga community, the Community Consultative Committee worked with multiple stakeholders, which include Community Development Chairman, Council of Chiefs and Alimama Women group to push for development  projects, including building markets and establishment of security posts.

She, therefore, called for support from government, spirited sons and daughters and other key stakeholders in the area for the empowerment of the citizens, noting that the organization will continue to engage with community members and government on regular basis in line with the requirements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The Sustainable Citizens Participation is a community based project, aimed at empowering the communities as part of the Afrihealth Optonet Association project.
