Elections: Group Warns Against Cancellation

The calls by some political parties urging the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to cancel the recently conducted gubernatorial election in Rivers State have been condemned by a group known as Rivers Youth Assembly, following INEC’s stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Chairman Board of Trustee of Rivers Youth Assembly, Kenneth West, said there is the need for maintenance of Public order to allow INEC perform its statutory duties without disruption.

Kenneth West observed the fact that Rivers State needed peace and harmony in spite of what he described as “several provocations on the part of Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi and his co-travelers.”

He cautioned Rivers Youth not to allow themselves to be used by “those whose stock in trade is stoking crisis”.

He advised that residents should remain calm and vigilant in the face of mounting pressures, even as INEC commenced the collation process and conclude the elections as scheduled..

In similar vein, a forum of 54 political parties in the state had appealed to the INEC to embark on collation of results from remaining six local governments without pressure from political parties. Chairman of the forum, Ihumwo Samuel, stated this following INEC’s stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt.
