IYC Can Only make Progress If Politics Is Avoided From Council

…Sokari Warned

The Chairman of Abua-Odual/Engenni-Ogbogolo Special Chapter of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Comarade Sokari Goodboy Sokari has warned that the only way the youth body can achieve significant success in the struggle for self-determination and resource control is when political activities are expunged from the group.

Sokari said this in a round table discussion with some social media influencers to mark his 33rd birthday anniversary over the weekend in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The Special Chapter Chairman maintained that for IYC to be more effective and focused, no executive member of the council should be allowed to hold any government position concurrently.

According to Comr. Sokari “to have an independent and more proactive IYC, moving forward, those holding positions in council should not aspire for any political position and even if they do, such persons should resign from their positions.”

He made it clear that no executive member of the council should use his position to endorse a candidate of any political party during elections”.

“I am using this medium to humbly advise the IYC Constitution Reviewing Committee chaired by the National Legal Adviser, Barr. Ayebakuro Igbeta, to consider these candid suggestions, as I strongly believe they will help restore the past glory of the body”.

Comrade Sokari lamented that the undue interference of government in IYC affairs has caused undue crises in the past, thereby impeding the progress of the body.

He therefore called for IYC executive and members in the various structures not to allow politicians to hijack the struggle for their selfish gains, but only allow the virtues of truth, fairness and justice to guide their actions and reactions.

He maintained that the struggle was bequeathed to them by their founding fathers and therefore they should not allow selfish politicians to hijack it for their personal gains, if really they are zealous to achieving the common objectives upon which the IYC was founded.

The IYC used the opportunity to congratulate Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on his wonderful victory at the polls inspite of the efforts of enemies of progress of the state. The body also congratulated the INEC for withstanding the federal pressure to thwart the will of the people and conclude the collation of the election results and declare the rightful winner.

IYC urged Wike and his cabinet to continue to wither the storm and consolidate on their achievements of the first tenure. The body as well used the opportunity to condole with the families that lost their loved ones during the turbulent periods and pledged their unalloyed loyalty and support at all times.
