New VC Of Rivers State University Rolls Out Programmes Of Action

…Says No More Hiding Place For Cultists

The new Vice Chancellor of the Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, Prof Nlerum Okogbule says it’s no longer going to be business as usual for both the students and staff of the institution.

He said adequate measures are being put in place by his administration to ensure everybody is put on their toes to actualize the university’s goal of producing skilled manpower for the state.

Prof. Okogbule who disclosed this recently during a media parley with information managers and newsmen in Port Harcourt said, to give bite to his words, arrangements are underway to partner with external agencies and some foreign universities for refresher training programmes for both the academic and non academic staff of the university which would be in batches and periodically too.

On educational infrastructure, the VC, a professor of International Law said a tour of all the faculties of the university by his top management authorities was already in progress to identify the peculiar challenges of these faculties for the overall improvement of the university.

Top on the agenda, the VC noted, is to tackle the lack of classrooms and hostels for the teeming student population necessitated by the creation of two additional faculties in the university namely: the Social Sciences and Humanities.

A committee had also been set up, he further disclosed, to look into the problem of power supply, all in a bid to create a conducive atmosphere for studies.

On the hydra-headed issue of cultism, Prof. Okogbule said his attention was not lost on the problem as the entire efforts of the University will amount to nothing if the lives of the students and staff are not guaranteed.

To this effect, he said the university management was working out a new relationship with the host community on intelligence gathering so that the genuine persons living in the community will easily be identified since most of the undesirable elements disturbing the university campus allegedly come from outside the campus.

This is in addition to other measures already in place which are confidential, the VC declared, stressing that with all the measures there will be no longer hiding place for such hoodlums
