Drivers Protest Death Of Colleague In Port Harcourt

Scores of aggrieved taxi drivers barricaded the roundabout at Rumokoro axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Monday morning in protest of the death of their colleague who died in hospital as a result of injuries he sustained from alleged beating by taskforce officials.

The drivers in an interview with Journalists said they are protesting the death of their colleague, Simeon Ihearulam who died on Monday morning after he slumped last Sunday  during an altercation with an official of the Rivers State Taskforce.

The protesting drivers were seen with sticks and placards with an inscription, ‘No more Task Force Intimidation’.

They demanded justice for their colleague. One of drivers who said he is the brother of the victim, Emeka Ibe said  his brother was beaten up by the taskforce official. Mr Ibe disclosed that his brother was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, vehicular movement and other activities was paralyzed along the Rumuokoro-Rukpokwu Road due to the protest as many business owners locked up their shops as at the time of filing the report. Neither the Rivers State Police Command nor the Rivers State Taskforce on Street Trading and Illegal Motor Parks had said anything yet.
