Education, Key To Societal Development – ONELGA Council Boss
Towards mass literacy of the people of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, and in line with global attainment of“Education for all by 2020”, the Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government Council has flagged off the Adult and Non-Formal Education (Literacy by Radio) Project in Omoku, Headquarters of the Local Government Area.
Performing the ceremony at the Council Pavilion, Chairman, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Hon. Vincent Job described education as key in the development of any society. He disclosed that education is one of the priority areas of the Council and pledged to put it in its rightful place; adding that the Council will support the Adult and Non-Formal Education with a view to raising literacy level of the Local Government Area.
The Council Boss who regretted the dwindling fortunes of education in the country, enjoined policy makers, curriculum developers and stakeholders to ensure a robust policy that can push education in Nigeria to meet International Best Practices.
In her presentation, Centre Co-coordinator of the Adult and Non-Formal Education, Mrs. Beatrice Ugorji explained that Literacy by Radio is a programme designed by the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education to raise the literacy level of Nigerians and those living and doing business in the country.
She said the programme will last for three months to assist new literates and learners acquire literacy in English, with the aim of reducing non-literates in Nigeria.
The Co-coordinator appealed to community leaders, religious leaders and others to mobilize those concerned to embrace the programme and improve their literacy levels.
Highpoint of the event was presentation of learning and instructional materials to learners even as goodwill messages were delivered by Supervisor for Education, ONELGA; representative of NMES in Rivers State and others.
