Population Census:  Fed. Commissioner Appeals For Support

In a bid to ensure a peaceful and accurate Enumeration Area Demarcation, (EAD) by the National Population Commission, the Hon. Federal Commissioner, Dr. Ipalibo .M. Harry, has called on the people of Asalga to give the Commission the maximum support so as to ensure successful execution of the exercise.

Dr. Harry made the call during the flag off ceremony for EAD phase 7 in Buguma, the headquarters of the Asari-Toru Local Government Council, Rivers State.

He urged the communities in the affected areas to support the Commission in carrying out the EAD by allowing the demarcators unfettered   access to facilities and places in the areas to be demarcated. While appealing to the traditional rulers, the stakeholders and the council to assist them to sensitize the people on the essence of the project, so as to enable the staff carry out their duties professionally and give the nation foolproof EAD frame that will form the basis for a successful census outcome.

According to Dr. Ipalibo Harry, the EAD constitutes the foundation on which the entire census architecture stands. Noting that it forms the basis for both planning and execution of the census project.  And that it is the vehicle that drives the entire process in the pre-census, actual enumeration and post census period and involves the division of the whole landmass of the country into small units that can easily be covered by a team of enumerators during the census.

He made it clear that the Commission has so far demarcated 112 LGA’s in all the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory under the previous Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercises.

The State Director, Mr. J.M. Daka said the EAD is one of the key steps towards the successful conduct of the next population and Housing Census.

According to him, the Commission has mapped out plans to establish and maintain a national frame including locality listing and house numbering for future censuses and surveys in line with the mandate of the Commission under section 24 of the third schedule of the 1999 constitution as amended.

The Council Boss, Chief Odiari Princewill in his response assured the Commission of the necessary support for the exercise to be a success. He charged the Commission to organize a credible exercise, noting that it is important in nation building and the development of any given community.
