Ahead of the governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, a good governance advocacy group, the Foundation for United Rivers (FUR), has called on delegates to ensure the election of a credible candidate that will carry on with the good legacies of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.
It also said such governorship candidate must be someone who has the needed political structure that cuts across the 23 local government areas of the state, and should be able to win the 2023 election for the PDP.
FUR, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday by its Convener, Ken Emeka Ahiakwo, specifically called on the delegates to consider voting for immediate-past chairman of PDP in the state, Chief Felix Amaechi Obuah, describing him as “best to succeed Wike”.
The statement said Obuah worked assiduously with Wike from 2013, to ensure that the state was not taken over by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections.
It further said the former PDP chairman deserve to be rewarded with the governorship ticket for the sacrifices he made, including assassination attempts on his life, to ensure that the party retained Rivers State.
The statement reads in part: “This is the personality who, in association with the preferred presidential hopeful, the most performed Governor in the history since new Rivers State came into existence, His Excellency Chief Barister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, deployed intellect,
resources and political acumen to resist the opposition and restore the past glory and the stolen mandate of PDP in Rivers State.
“This political strategists of our times, in association with Governor Wike did not take a “sidon look” posture like other politicians when PDP was sinking in the state because of the love they had for the party.
“Under the able leadership of Felix Obuah and His Excellency, PDP in Rivers State gained popularity and prominence in the state, the South South and the nation at large. The 2015 and 2019 governorship elections tsunami caused by the opposition parties through use of some military personnel and cultists were brought to a standstill.
“PDP became victorious and gained ground in the annals of history as the only party in the State till date. Felix Obuah as PDP Chairman in the state was one of the backbones of the party, who brought resounding victory in various law suits occasioned by the opposition’s desperate onslaught to take over power.
“The party under his able leadership helped sister states especially in the South South and the nation in general to win governorship elections convincingly in the mist of stiff opposition and threatened militarized election processes.
“His contributions to the sustenance of the party before, during and after his tenure as the Chairman certainly prove that he is the best candidate to hoist the party’s ticket for the 2023 governorship elections in the state.”
