Int’l Day Of African Child: Rivers NAWOJ, Calls For Promotion Of Child Rights

The chairperson of National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Rivers State, Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu has called for child rights promotion in Nigeria.

Mrs Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu said this during the commemoration of this year’s International Day Of African Child.

She observed that the day brought  to the fore the challenging lives of the African Child and the need for serious commitment towards addressing the numerous challenges facing children in our country and across the continent.

“As we celebrate this year’s International Day of the African Child, NAWOJ is of the view that there is need to focus and promote specifically the rights of the child and also the urgent need to raise worldwide awareness to assist children in need while preventing them from becoming victims of sexual abuses, child labour, abduction, and other harmful conditions children and exposed to”, she said.

She further stressed the need to highlight the impact of conflicts on children, protect used and abused children and ensure that  every African child is given the chance to develop to his or her full potential.

NAWOJ chairperson maintained that children and youths hold the keys to building the strong, peaceful societies envisioned as part of the 2030 development agenda.

The International Day Of the African Child is a day set aside to highlight current situations and rights of the child to quality education and better life in addition to remembering the murder of black children in Soweto, South Africa who marched in protest against apartheid-inspired education.

This year’s theme is “Access To The Child Friendly Justice System In Africa”.
