Drivers Protest Illegal Levy By Touts In Eleme

Business activities were disrupted last Monday in the Eleme-Oyigbo axis of Rivers State as commuters trekked long distances following a clash between commercial drivers and suspected motor park touts popularly known as a Agboros.

The drivers blocked the Eleme-Port Harcourt Road to protest alleged torture and attempted murder of one of their colleagues who refused to pay for an alleged illegal ticket issued by the touts.

Eyewitnesses told our reporter that the driver was beaten to coma by the touts over the disagreement, before the intervention of police personnel from the Elimgbu and Elelenwo Divisional Police headquarters who brought the situation under control.

One of the protesting drivers, who gave his name as Silas Obi told our reporter they were seeking for the intervention of Rivers State Government to put a stop to the collection of multiple tickets of up to N2,500 daily, while arguing  that they could only pay the ticket toll supervised by the State Ministry of Transport.
