Aggrieved Petitioner Demands N50m For Torture By SARS Operatives

 

A petitioner has told the Judicial Commission of Inquiry how he was tortured by the operatives of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The petitioner, Barnabas Worlu, who testified before the commission later told newsmen he was tortured by the operatives of the disbanded SARS early last year.

The petitioner said he was on his way to land money on March 29 when he was arrested and tortured by the operatives of the disbanded SARS.

He said he heard gunshots as people ran and was arrested by operatives of SARS in Rukpokwu.

The petitioner said he did not commit any offence adding that he did not know why they were shooting.

He also said he had dislocation due to the torture and had fainted when they took him to station.

He said that he wants the commission to look into his case saying he could neither fend for himself nor his family.

He said his children had dropped out of school since he could not pay for schooling and said he wants compensation.

The petitioner said: “Today I’m a disfigured person. I can’t fend for myself. I should be compensated. I need to be compensated – fifty million (naira)”.

He said he could not walk properly and the incident affected his family.

He also said he had spent lots of money on treatment.

At the inaugural sitting last year, the commission chaired by Honourable Justice C.I. Uriri (retd) said it had received memoranda from members of the public.

The commission chairman assured the commission would thoroughly investigate petitions brought before it and to make recommendations accordingly.
