19th National Sports Festival: Unity Torch Arrives Rivers State
The Unity Torch of the 2018 National Sports Festival has arrived Port Harcourt.
The Torch of Unity was received by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo at Government House, Port Harcourt.
The Deputy Governor while receiving the Unity Torch said sports is a unifying factor in Nigeria.
Dr. Ipalibo Harry who represented governor Wike noted that Rivers State will always participate in events that enhance national unity and cohesion.
She said that sport has remained a key source of national unity, which should be advanced at all times.
Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Mr Boma Iyaye said Rivers State is one of the nation’s key centres of sports development.
He said that the state hosted the sports festival in 1988 and 2011, pointing out that the record set in 2011 by Rivers State is yet to be broken.
Presenting the torch, South-South Zonal Director of Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr Sunny Obot said that torch is a symbol of national unity which was lit by President Muhammadu Buhari on October 1, 2018.
He said that the torch has travelled through the different zones of the federation as is customary with Sports Festivals.
The torch presentation event was witnessed by officials of the Federal Ministry of Sports and their counterparts in Rivers State at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
