Rivers Governorship Race: Dr Mike Nwielaghi Enters The Political Fray Under NDC Platform

Dr. Mike Barieenee Nwielaghi, Ph.D, MBA, B.Sc, LL.B, BL (in view), former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), has stepped more prominently into the unfolding political contest for the 2027 Rivers State governorship, with strong indications of alignment with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

A seasoned technocrat and long-time political actor, Dr. Nwielaghi has a deep-rooted history in Nigeria’s democratic and civic evolution.

He is widely associated with early political formations that contributed to the emergence of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which later merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A founding member of the APC both nationally and in Rivers State, Dr. Nwielaghi also served as the party’s pioneer State Organising Secretary, where he played strategic roles in grassroots mobilization, party administration, and political coordination during the formative years of the party.

In Rivers State political history, he previously served as State Chairman of the Conference of Political Parties (CPP), during his active leadership role in the Alliance for Democracy (AD), where he played key roles in political coordination and grassroots mobilization.

Dr. Nwielaghi is also noted for his active participation in the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), where he was involved in advocacy efforts surrounding environmental justice, human rights, and the socio-political development of Ogoni land.

In addition, he once served as President of KAGOTE and was also a two-time Vice President of the organization, further strengthening his standing within Ogoni socio-political leadership structures.

A Justice of the Peace (JP) and a Knight of St. Mulumba of the Roman Catholic Church, Dr. Nwielaghi is widely respected for his commitment to faith, community service, and humanitarian ideals.

Beyond politics, he is widely recognized for philanthropy and community development.

He has consistently supported widows, vulnerable families, and indigent persons, while also sponsoring scholarships for students across different levels of education.

His humanitarian footprint remains visible in several communities across Rivers State.

He is also credited, according to community accounts, with substantial personal contributions toward the construction of one of the most prominent Catholic church structures in Ogoni land, reflecting his strong commitment to faith-based and community development initiatives.

As Chairman of the Board of Trustees of HYPREP, Dr. Nwielaghi reportedly influenced the establishment and execution of over 132 HYPREP projects across Ogoni communities, including the widely acclaimed Centre of Excellence at Wiiyaakara in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Described by admirers and associates as a scholar par excellence, Dr. Nwielaghi combines academic distinction with practical leadership experience.

He hails from Buan Community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Politically, Dr. Nwielaghi is now positioning himself for the Rivers State governorship race under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a move already generating significant political discussions across the state and beyond.

His presence at the NDC National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday, May 9, 2026, was described as colourful and highly symbolic, with thousands of supporters reportedly mobilized from Rivers State and other parts of the country, signaling growing political momentum around his ambition.

Observers describe him as a flamboyant, strategic, and experienced political actor whose combination of academic depth, activism, philanthropy, and administrative exposure positions him as a notable contender in the evolving Rivers State governorship race. As political alignments continue to shift, Dr. Mike Nwielaghi remains a key figure to watch in what is expected to be a highly competitive and dynamic electoral season in Rivers State.
