…Wants INEC Chairman To Rescue Situation
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to quickly intervene in what is going on the South South region before it turns into full blown war zone.
The Election Monitoring unit of the party after reviewing the activities of the military in the region and the blatant use of force on election officials and party agents calls on the INEC boss Prof Mahmood Yakubu to quickly save the situation and avert the deterioration into war.
According to a statement from the election monitoring unit, the military has hijacked all electoral functions from the statutory workers and taken over collation of results which is now relocated in barracks where even the Police could not access.
The statement said that the ugly story is the same in other parts of the country particularly in Oyo and Kano states where PDP is in comfortable lead.
In Rivers State, the military has been so brutal and heartless as they harass and intimidate harmless electoral officers and party agents.
The group said that the brigandage shows clearly the desperation and lack of conscience of the ruling party and warns that if not checked it could have far reaching consequences.
“No matter what it takes the will of the people must be restored otherwise we can bid bye to democracy and peace in this country, says the statement”.
The group particularly called on the international community to note the illegal use of force by the military operatives where civil security like the Police are totally edged out.
