Poised to promote the indigenous languages in the state and by extension the diverse cultures of Rivers people, Rivers lawmakers have frowned at the non implementation of Indigenous Languages Law of 2003 by all the public schools in the state.
This was sequel to the motion presented on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule.
Titled “Motion For The Rivers State Teaching of Indegenuos Languages” the sponsors of the motion Hons. Martin Amaewhule and Anselem Oguguo stressed the need to Showcase the state Indegenuos languages to the world pointing out that the state has rich and diverse cultures.
All the lawmakers who spoke on the motion maintained that the role of the Ministry of Education on the issue be investigated .
They also resolved that the House Committee on Education do carry out an investigation why teaching of indigenous languages law of 2003 which was assented since 2005 is not implemented and report back to the House in 2 weeks.
Outlining the implications of ignoring the Indegenuos languages, the Speaker of the House, IKUNYI OWAJI IBANI in his submission said the matter should be taken very seriously.
Meanwhile, the House has inaugurated the lawmaker representing Asari Toru constituency 1 Hon Tekenari Granville to replace Hon Dr George Ipalibo of the SDP who was earlier declared winner of the march 9 state assembly election.
His inauguration has increased the membership of PDP lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly to 31 as only Oyigbo constituency is being represented by SDP lawmaker.
The court of appeal sitting in Port Harcourt had recently upheld the judgement of the election petition tribunal which held that Hon Granville was the rightful winner of the election
