A Port Harcourt High Court has sentenced to death by hanging three persons who were charged on three counts of conspiracy and murder of former leader of Niger Delta ex-militant, Soboma George and a groundnut seller identified as Joy John-Ejims.
The court ruled that, Dougbra Ogbe, Emmanuel Gladston and Bere Matthew, should be hanged on their neck till they die for conspiring and killing Soboma George and John-Ejims.
It would be recalled that the former Niger Delta Militant Leader, Soboma George was killed alongside a groundnut seller identified as Joy John-Ejims within a football field in Nembe Street in Borokiri area of Port Harcourt on the 24th of August 2010.
The trial judge, Justice George Omereji in a judgement ruled that the prosecution was able to prove his case beyond reasonable doubts with the evidence of an eyewitness identified as Emmanuel Eniete who was also shot at his hand on the day of the incident
The defendants confessed that they killed George because he wanted to kill them after they had refused to kill the former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and then Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.
Meanwhile speaking with journalist’s outside the courtroom, the prosecution counsel, Ipalibo Karibo-Botoye, said he was satisfied with the judgement which trial lasted for ten years and expressed readiness to defend the case at appeal court if dragged.
The President, Niger Delta Youth for Transparency Democracy, Johnson Solomon, said they are pleased with the justice got from the judgement
Reports said there was heavy security presence within and around the court premises for the judgement.
