INEC, Not RSIEC Delisted Other Parties – Justice Omereji (Rtd)
The chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC Justice George Omereji (Retired) has disclosed that his commission is not in position to delist registered political parties in the state, while advising the affected parties to seek legal approach to their grievances caused by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The retired Justice, while speaking with journalists recently also explained that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the Peoples Redemption Party PRP in the state decided to shift the date of their primary election. He informed that the concerned parties approached him, giving the prevailing COVID-19 situation as their reason for asking for the extension of the date. He informed that he acceded to their plea for extension of their primary elections and agreed to 12 and 14 of February 2021 as new dates for the election. “We are not postponing election, we are to supervise the election,” as he assured of non-interference in the outcome of the elections in the state.
Justice Omereji assured the people of RSIEC’s seriousness to ensure that the peoples votes count.
But the Labour Party in the state has threatened to sue RSIEC to court for allowing PDP to participate in the coming election against the stipulated date of the election. The party argued that the PDP acted in contravention of the stipulated date.
