I’ll Bring Dividends Of Democracy To Grassroots – PHALGA Chairman-Elect
The Chairman-elect of Port-Harcourt City Local Government, Sir Allwell Ihunda, has said that he would bring dividends of democracy to the people of the local government.
The chairman-elect who contested the chairmanship election on platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spoke after voting in the April 17 Chairmanship and Councillorship election in Rivers State at Unit 19, Ward Two in Orieku Hall, Orogbum Community.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission on Sunday declared Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates on platform of the Peoples Democratic Party as winners of the election in the twenty-three local government areas.
The chairman-elect speaking as chairmanship candidate said: “If we win the election and by the time we assume office we are going to complement on the good works of our governor, His Excellency, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. He has done well (and) we are going to ensure that we bring the dividends of democracy to the grassroot(s)”.
He said that the party had one hundred per cent chance of winning the election.
Sir Ihunda said that the party would win the election because it had done “tremendously well” under the governorship of Chief Nyesom Wike.
He said that the governor had shown capacity in bringing development to the state which was visible saying that the ruling party would not have any problem winning an election.
He said apart from certainly winning the local government election, the ruling party would also certainly win the forthcoming general elections slated for 2023.
He dismissed claims that the State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) in charge of the election would do bidding of the state government to favour the ruling party.
The then chairmanship candidate said: “That is complete lie. It’s a blatant lie by the opposition parties. The opposition parties are not on ground. They didn’t campaign. PDP in Rivers State were all over the place. In Port-Harcourt we visited the 20 Wards. We had our grand finale but we never saw any opposition party campaigning”.
He described the voting process as free and fair and had called on the electorate to vote for candidates of their choice at their polling units.
He said that he was impressed with the turnout of the voters.
Election materials had arrived at polling units on Saturday at 10:33am and voting had started shortly after.
One of the voters, Mrs Precious Ugochukwu, who spoke after voting that said she liked the way the process was conducted.
She however said that those who would win should keep their promises to the people, promises made during the campaign.
