Garri Union Suspends Member Over Invocation Of ‘Juju’
Garri Sellers Union in Bishop Okoye Street of Mile iii, Diobu, Port Harcourt has suspended one of its members over invocation of ‘juju’, National Network has learned.
We gathered that the suspended member was accused by another member of the union of stealing a bag of garri worth thirty six thousand naira which was kept in a store he has access to.
A member of the union who pleaded anonymity who is privy to the incident told our reporter that the man who claimed he was accused wrongly went to a community in Ogoni and summoned his accuser in a ‘juju’ shrine and other two members of the union who confronted him to know the whereabouts of the bag of garri that was kept in his custody.
Our source revealed that the man accused of stealing the bag of garri was suspended by the union after he insisted that eight hundred thousand naira must be paid to him before he can withdraw the case from the ‘juju’ shrine when the union invited him.
The source further stated that the members of the union summoned in the ‘juju’ shrine have vowed not to honour invitation given to them by the Chief messenger of the shrine because of their own religious belief.
In a related incident, one John who hailed from Obi/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State summoned by his client, Kingdom, in a juju shrine in Ozuzu, Etche LGA has cried out for help.
John in an interview with our correspondent disclosed that Mr Kingdom approached him to invest in a forex business with agreement that he(Kingdom) will take his capital in six months time aside the monthly interest.
He told our reporter that his client could not exercise patience as he collected almost eighty-five per cent of his capital in two months before the stipulated six months period which affected the business.
He said he opted to refund Kingdom his balance since the business was affected after his client collected eighty five percent of his capital when he received letter of summon by a messenger from a juju shrine in Ozuzu in Etche Local Government Area which mandated him to appear before the Shrine that Kingdom reported the matter to the Chief Priest.
He further stated that he reported the matter to Ozuoba Police Division in Obio/LGA and up till now Kingdom as well as the juju Messenger have refused honouring invitation by the Police.
He told our correspondent that he was ready to refund Mr Kingdom his balance but the man is insisting that he must bring the money to the shrine.
A legal practitioner in Port Harcourt, Festus Bonwin of the Centre For Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign in an interview with our reporter said the law frowns on invocation of ‘juju’ and trial by ordeal.
