Alleged Torture, Extortion Of Undergraduate Student: Police Officers Risk Sanction

Police officers fingered in alleged extortion, torture and barbing of hair of Eke Peter Nwachukwu, who said he is a three hundred-level student of Social Science Faculty of the Rivers State University, risk sanction as the Commissioner of Police, CP Eboka Friday, has ordered investigation into the incident.

CP Friday after he met with the student and some members of human rights organization, ordered that the officers involved should be identified and the allegation made against them by the student should be investigated.

The student who was allegedly brutalized by some personnel attached to headquarters of Police Anti-cultism unit at Ropukwu, former SARS office has narrated his ordeal to journalists and said the security personnel also extorted the sum of fifty thousand naira from him.

Mr Nwachukwu explained that on his way home last week Thursday, some persons on Wine coloured Sienna vehicle who were putting on black intercepted the bolt car that took him a ‘drop’ opposite First bank at Rumuola and asked him to come down from the vehicle, which he did. Mr Nwachukwu explained after the persons who turned out to be officials of Police Anti-Cultism unit searched him, they did not find anything incriminating on him and they ordered him to enter their vehicle.

At that point, he insisted on knowing what his offence was, and one of the officers gave him a slap while others started hitting him with some objects and later tied his hands and threw him into their vehicle as he continued to scream which attracted large number of persons to the scene.

He further explained that they threw him into their vehicle and laid him down and three of the officers sat on him, at a point he started shouting that he could no longer breathe when one of the Police officers told his colleagues that they should sit him down.

The ‘victim’ stated that he was taken to the office of the Anti-Cultism at Rukpokwu where he was stripped to boxers and detained.

The ‘victim’ disclosed on Friday, morning, January 21, 2022 he was given statement paper and he made his statement.

He revealed that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) tagged him a cultist and a ‘yahoo’ boy which he told the IPO he is not.

Mr Nwachukwu alleged that the Police officers told him that they can shoot him and nothing will happen, nobody will ask of him.

He said two of his friends came that morning and the Police told them to pay fifty thousand naira before he (Nwachukwu) could be released.

He noted that he was released after his friends paid fifty thousand naira. The frightened Nwachukwu demanded Justice in the matter
