The Principal of Bishop Crowther Memorial Secondary School (BCMSS), Rumuobiakani, Port Harcourt, Rev Chieme Chimaobi has received an award from the Rivers State chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

Speaking at the ceremony which held at the school on Saturday, Rev. Chimaobi described the award as a honour, and promised to partner with sports writers across the country while dedicating the award to the Bishop of Evo Diocese, Rev. Innocent Ordu who, in his wisdom, made it possible for him to be the Principal of BCMSS.

“With this award on me today, I want to tell you that I will partner with SWAN to enhance and improve sporting events and development in Rivers State and across the country. In fact, I look forward to working with members of the Rivers State chapter of SWAN.  By the grace of God, this relationship will be sustained in the years to come”, the cleric promised.

He used the occasion to thank Governor Nyesom Wike for the construction of the Real Madrid Football Academy, Port Harcourt as well as the consistent sponsorship of Rivers United Football Club and Rivers Angel Football Club respectively, urging fans of the two clubs to continue to give their unflinching support to the teams as well as protect the state government sporting facilities.

He stated that the Real Madrid Football Academy would not only enhance football knowledge but would also pave the way for future football stars.

Earlier in her speech, Chairman of SWAN in Rivers, Sarah David said that one of the reasons the group decided to present an award to the Principal was because he has not only inspired young ones in the sports sector but has also inculcated sound moral and leadership qualities into the children, pointing out that despite Covid-19 pandemic, the authority of the school has been able to sustain sporting events.

She expressed satisfaction with the curriculum of the school and its infrastructures, describing the school as sports friendly.

“Sports does only bring people together and strengthen the relationship between individuals and corporate bodies but it also serves as a unifying factor amongst nations”, she said.

Mr. Innocent Wokoma and Barth Ndubuwah and other officials of SWAN in the event urged the Principal of BCMSS to place schools’ sports as top priority, assuring that SWAN would collaborate with the school to enhance sports development in the school.
